I often get the same puzzled reactions from people when I say, “I am a Junior Digital Marketer.”
The recent run-ins I had with people, some are strangers whom I just came acquainted with, the relatives I see in family gatherings and others are old friends that I have not seen in a good while.
The conversations with them often enough lead to the question, “so what do you now?”
You might have the same quizzical reaction when you saw the title of this article.

Well, to be perfectly candid, it was weird enough transitioning from being unemployed for months to suddenly becoming a junior digital marketer. It has also been some time that I have worked with a group of people, let alone a team of creatives.
But the fact of the matter is, I wasn’t so sure myself what a Junior Digital Marketer does either until the first day of my job.
With the help of my associates and after a month doing what I do, here’s my take on being a Junior Digital Marketer for BizDigital Sdn Bhd. Hopefully, it paints a picture of what most people in my position do.
To start, digital marketers work closely with the rest of the team in creating strategies for brands online as each company has a distinct brand voice and personality.
Digital marketers create a framework where we help clients decide on the look and feel of the online content. Including how the brand should articulate itself to its audience.
As a Junior Digital Marketer, I also liaise with the designers providing them with the creative brief they need to execute the designs for any online content. Much like how a kitchen-helper would prep the ingredients for their head chef.
A lot of research when it comes to being a digital marketer goes into what the copy and content should be for each individual brand.
So to anyone who’s interested in this field of work, prepare yourself to consume a lot of content! It will be your main diet as a digital marketer.
I soon come to learn that Digital Marketers could also mean Social Media Strategists, Online Content Creators, etc.
It differs depending on companies but most of the time, the tasks at hand of these positions are fairly similar.
Digital Marketers could also be branched into different types of expertise for example Content Creator (the role that I’m currently in), A/B Boosting and Analytics and SEO Analyst.
In a nutshell, I would be tasked with creating a content strategy for each social media platform and together liaise with the designers in executing the content.
Digital marketers and designers are like two peas in a pod, they’ve got each other’s back!
Other digital marketers would be responsible for A/B Boosting and Analytics for each content and monitor which online paid ads work and otherwise.
Another ‘archetype’ of a digital marketer is the SEO Analyst, they are the ones that optimize the online platform. By using keywords and backlinks getting us on the first page of Google.
So to the ones that clicked on this article, I hope I shed some light on what a Digital Marketer does and maybe rubbed that puzzling look you make off when this term comes up again.
